Jagannath University's assistant proctor Deen Islam and classmate Raihan Siddique Amman have been arrested in connection with the suicide of law department's student Fairuz Abantika.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman confirmed it on Saturday (March 16) night. They were arrested after a case was filed against them for instigating Fairuz Abantika, to commit suicide.

The accused are JnU's law department student Abantika's classmate Raihan Siddique Amman, and the university's assistant proctor Deen Islam, said officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station Firoz Hossain.

Abantika's mother Tahmina Shabnam filed the case on Saturday night, the OC said.

Abantika's mother mentions in her case statement that Amman Siddique harassed her daughter sexually on online and offline platforms, while Deen Islam abused her verbally when Abantika informed him about the matter.

Abantika was laid to eternal rest at her father's grave in Cumilla on Saturday.Meanwhile, a tense situation has been prevailing on Jagannath University campus over the suicide of Abantika since Friday (March 15) night. Abantika's classmates and the university's general students on Saturday (March 16) staged demonstration to press home their six-point demands over the incident.

They also issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the JnU administration to implement their demands.

Regarding the demands, coordinator of the movement and third year student Ivan Tahsiv said, "We have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the university authorities to implement our six-point demands including the arrest of the accused. If the JnU authorities fail to meet our demands, we will lay siege to the vice-chancellor's office at 11:00am on Monday next."

Abantika's body was found hanging at her house in the Cumilla city on Friday night. According to her classmates, before her death, Abantika wrote on Facebook that law department student Raihan Siddique Amman had sexually harassed her, and when she informed assistant proctor Deen Islam, he verbally abused her, instead of taking action against Raihan.

Both the accused have been suspended from the university.
