A union-level leader of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party was hacked to death by a supporter of the ruling Awami League in Gofargaon upazila of Mymensingh on Monday.

The BNP’s Paithol union unit joint secretary Harun or Rashid, a homeopathy physician by profession, was killed in Goyespur area at about 11:45am, said the party leaders and police officials.

Pagla police station inspector (investigation) Sheikh Johirul Islam Munna said that the locals caught the lone attacker, Rubel Miah, 35.

Paithol union parishad member and Paithol ward unit Awami Swechasebak League president Ashraf Uddin said that slain Harun was a BNP leader while Rubel was a supporter of the ruling Awami League.
