One more dies of dengue, 584 others hospitalised across Bangladesh


One more person died of dengue in the Dhaka city in the past 24 hours till Wednesday morning, taking the official death toll to 62 across Bangladesh since January this year.

At least 584 more dengue patients were hospitalised across the country in the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am of which, 382 were reported in Dhaka city and 202 in other places outside the capital city, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

Dengue killed 62 people and compelled 10,455 others to get admitted to health  facilities across the country so far this year.On Wednesday, at least 1,911 dengue patients, including 1,285 in 53 public and private hospitals in the capital, were undergoing treatment across the country, according to official data.

Of the total hospitalisations, 7,466 were reported in the Dhaka city and 2,989 in other places except the capital city.Of the total deaths, 49 were reported in Dhaka city, 11 in Chattogram, one in Barishal, and one in Mymensingh.

A total of 2,477 people were hospitalised and 15 died from the mosquito-borne viral disease in the five days of July, showing an unbridled rise in dengue infections with the advent of the monsoon in the month.

According to DGHS data, 566 people with dengue were hospitalised in January, 166 in February, 111 in March, 143 in April, 1,036 in May and 5,956 in June.

At least 34 people died of the disease in June, six in January, three in February, two in April and two in May while no death was reported in March, according to the data.

Public health officials and experts have warned that the dengue situation might get out of control this year when the monsoon sets in with heavy rains unless the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes is controlled.

In 2021 and 2022, the official dengue cases were 28,429 and 62,382 respectively.The highest dengue death toll was reported 281 in 2022 when Bangladesh officially logged one dengue death in the first six months.
