Attack on Hasina’s motorcade: Ex-MP among 4 get life terms

Daily Bangla Times: A court in Satkhira has sentenced four people including a former lawmaker to life imprisonment and 44 others to seven years in jail in two cases filed over an attack on the motorcade of the then Leader of the Opposition and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Satkhira in 2002.Judge Bishwanath Mondol of Satkhira Special Tribunal-3 passed the order on Tuesday. Advocate Abdul Latif, Public Prosecutor of Satkhira Judges Court, confirmed the matter .

The convicts who got life imprisonment are Habibul Islam Habib, former MP of Satkhira-1 constituency, BNP leader Ripon, Juba Dal leaders Abdul Kader Bachchu and Arifur Rahman Ranju.

On August 30, 2002, Sheikh Hasina’s motorcade was attacked in front of the Kalaroa Upazila BNP office in Satkhira, when the BNP-led four-party alliance government was in power.

Awami League president Sheikh Hasina was on her way to Dhaka after attending several programmes in Satkhira and its adjoining areas.But when her motorcade reached the Kalaroa Upazila BNP office area, a group of terrorists attacked with machetes, bombs, and firearms.

Several people, including former MP Mujibur Rahman, were injured when the terrorists fired on the convoy and detonated bombs.On the same day, Kalaroa Upazila Freedom Fighter, Commander Moslem Uddin, filed a case.

After an investigation, the police filed a charge sheet against 50 people in this connection.
