BNP leader Maj Hafiz sent to jail in case filed in 2011


A magistrate court in Dhaka on Tuesday rejected the bail petition of BNP vice-chairman Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and ordered to send him to jail a sabotage case filed in 2011.

Earlier in the morning, Maj Hafiz sought bail surrendering before the court of metropolitan magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury in Dhaka. After hearing the bail petition, the court passed the order.

On December 14, Major Hafiz went to India for his knee treatment. When he was in India, he was jailed for 21 months in the case. Besides, he was fined Tk 5,000 and in default, he will have to serve one month more in jail.

Six other BNP men have also been jailed in the case. They were Major (Retd) Md Hanif, MA Awal Khan, Md Russell, Moinul Islam, Babul Hossain Babu, and Alamgir Biswas Raju.

Among them, Maj (Retd) Md Hanif has been jailed for 21 months while the rest have been sentenced to 42 months of imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000 each.

Maj Hafiz returned back home from India on March 3.According to the case statement, the accused persons held a rally at Dhaka's Mohakhali area on June 4, 2011 and obstructed police to perform their duties. They also assaulted policemen and vandalised and torched vehicles. Kamrul Hasan Talukdar, sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station, submitted the charge sheet in the case on April 29, 2014.
