SC upholds contempt of court punishment of BNP leader Habib

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday upheld a High Court verdict, convicting BNP leader Habibur Rahman Habib for contempt of court and sentencing him to five months imprisonment.

A three-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order, scrapping a leave to appeal petition filed by the BNP leader.

The High Court on November 22 sentenced BNP leader Habib to five-months imprisonment for committing contempt of court by making derogatory comments about a judge.

The HC bench of Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Bashir Ullah delivered the verdict after hearing the statement of Habibur, who was produced before the bench by police of Sher-e-Bangla police station.
