Gayeshwar, Nipun get pre-arrest bail

The High Court on Monday granted pre-arrest bail until March 25 to the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and the party’s Dhaka district unit general secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury in separate cases. A bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Ahmed Sohel granted their bail after the duo surrendered before the court.

Gayeshwar was granted bail in six cases, including one relating to an attack on the chief justice’s official residence during the party’s  grand rally in Dhaka on October 28, 2023.

Five other cases against Gayeshwar are related to violence around the party’s October 28 rally. Nipun, daughter-in-law of Gayeshwar, was granted bail in one case, related to violence at Keraniganj, outskirt of the capital, during the same event. Earlier, she was granted anticipatory bail in the case of attacking on the chief justice’s residence.

A total of 71 BNP leaders, mostly senior leaders, including the party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were made accused in a number of cases over the violence during the rally.

Pro-BNP lawyer Zainul Abedin said that hundreds of opposition politicians were in jails in various false and fictitious cases, related to clashes with police during the rally.

He said that detained BNP leaders got bail in many of the cases, except the one of relating to the attack on the chief justice’s house.

BNP leader and lawyer Nitai Roy Chowdhury moved the bail prayers for his daughter Nipun, and Gayeshwar.
