An interim government will be formed soon according to the constitution, said Awami League presidium member Muhammad Faruk Khan on Sunday (October 15).

"The representatives of 10 European Union (EU) countries have wanted to know how the country will be run in the days ahead. We told them that an interim government will be formed as per the provision of the constitution shortly," he said. "It will also work as an election-time government."

Faruk Khan was talking to journalists following a meeting at the residence of EU Ambassador in Bangladesh Charles Whiteley on Sunday. The representatives of 10 EU countries including the EU Ambassador were present at the meeting.Urging the government to ensure a free, fair and participatory election in Bangladesh, the representatives of EU countries wanted to know how the country would be run in the days ahead.

"We told them that the Election Commission (EC) will announce the election schedule. Then an interim government will be formed according to the provision of the constitution which will also work as an election-time government," he said.

Faruk Khan said the EU will send a small-size experts' tem to monitor the upcoming 12th national parliamentary election in Bangladesh. "It has been proved from our talks at the meeting that they (European Union countries) want a free, fair and credible election in Bangladesh which we also want. They also wanted to know what we will do to hold a participatory election."

Awami League's International Affairs secretary Shammi Ahmed, Information and Research secretary Selim Mahmud, executive members Tarana Halim, Nirmol Chatterjee, International Sub-Committee members Sohrab Hossain, Tarique Hasan Sami and Khaled Masud Ahmed were present.
