4 killed in pickup-auto rickshaw collision in Jhenidah


Daily Bangla Times: A 15-month-old baby and his seven-year-old cousin were among four people killed in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a battery-run three-wheeler in Jhenidah's Kotchandpur upazila this noon.


Four others were injured in the accident. Three of the deceased were identified as three-wheeler driver Suleiman Hossain, 65, of Shahpur Ghighati in Kaliganj upazila; Rafan, 15-month-old son of Rubel Hossain and Rima Khatun of Elangi in Kotchandpur upazila; and Rafan's cousin Khukumoni, 7.


The injured were identified as Rafan's mother Rima Khatun, 25, aunt Sheuli Khatun, 50, and two other passengers of the three-wheeler Al Amin, 65, and Antar Hossain, 25, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.

According to eyewitnesses, Rima and Sheuli along with Rafan and Khukumoni were returning to their Elangi house after visiting a doctor in Kotchandpur town.


The auto-rickshaw collided with the oncoming pickup in front of Kashipur Municipal College around noon, leaving seven passengers and a pedestrian seriously injured.


The injured were taken to Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared three people, including the two children, dead. Four of the five injured were referred to Jashore Sadar Hospital where an unidentified person succumbed to his injuries.


SM Ramiz Uddin of Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex said three people were brought dead to the hospital.


Moin Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kotchandpur Police Station, said three people died on the way to Kotchandpur Hospital and one died on the way to Jashore hospital. The pickup driver fled the scene, but the vehicle was seized, the OC said.
