The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council general secretary, Rana Dashgupta, on Sunday said that no untoward incidents would happen during Durga Puja if the government did not want such things to happen. Referring to 2021 Durga Puja celebrations in Bangladesh, he said that it was largely peaceful.

‘Such things happen when the government wants  those to happen and nothing happens if the government does not want,’ Rana Dashgupta said at a press conference at the National Press Club, responding to a question whether there was a fear of attack during the upcoming Durga Puja.

He announced that the BHBCUC would hold a grand rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 4 at 2:00pm to press home its demands.

The organisation will also hold demonstrations on October 6, at divisional, district and upazila levels across the country in demand of fulfilling the election pledges given by the Awami League in the election manifesto for the minorities before the 2018 general election.

As part of its central programme, it will hold a rally in front of the National Press Club on the day at 4:00pm.

The election pledges included formation of a minority commission, ensuring safety and security of the minority communities, proper implementation of the vested property law and others.

Rana Dashgupta called on the government to ensure safety and security of Hindu religious minorities during the upcoming Durga Puja scheduled to be held in the third week of October.

Replying to a question, Rana Dashgupta said that the Awami League government could ensure safety and security of the Hindus during the Puja if they wanted to.

Rana Dashgupta called on all the political parties to refrain from giving political programmes during the Durga Puja.

President of organisation Neem Chandra Bhowmik, central leaders Manindra Kumar Nath, Milon Kanti Dattta, Ranjan Karmaker, among others, attended the press conference.
