Nine cases filed against over 17,000 Jamaat activists

At least nine cases were filed against over 17,000 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s son Maswood Sayedee, in Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar, and Chattogram over the series of clashes between police and Jamaat activists that left a person killed.

In Cox’s Bazar, six cases were filed against 1,2000 Jammat leaders and activists on Wednesday, local police confirmed.

Jamaat announced fresh programmes protesting at barring of the party activists from holding namaz-e-janaza, police attacks on ghayebana janaza– funeral session in absentia– and killing of a person at Cox’s Bazar.

In a virtual press briefing, Jamaat’s acting ameer Mujibur Rahman said that the party would hold dua sessions across the country on Friday after jumma prayers and hold processions on August 23 to protest police attacks and the killing of a person.

In Dhaka, police filed a case with Shahbagh police station accusing over 5,000 leaders and activists of Jamaat and its associate organisations of attacking, vandalism, and setting fire to motorcycles while taking the body of Jamaat leader Sayedee by ambulance from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to Pirojpur early Tuesday.
