US visa restrictions would be applicable to those who will undermine the democratic election process in Bangladesh," said US Department of State spokesman Matthew Miller.
He made the remark during a regular press briefing at the US State Department on Monday (July 24).
When his attention was drawn whether the Unted States would impose visa restrictions on those who will hinder the democratic election process, US Department of State spokeman Matthew Miller told reporters that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a new visa policy for Bangladesh by restricting travel permit of individuals whom it would assume be responsible for hindering the January 2024 elections likely to be held in Bangladesh.
"Today, I announced a new visa policy to promote free and fair elections. Under this policy, we can impose visa restrictions on individuals and their immediate family members if they are responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh," said Antony Blinken on May 24 last.
Blinken also said the move could affect current or former officials and politicians and members of law enforcement, the judiciary and security services "believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh".
"The holding of free and fair elections is the responsibility of everyone – voters, political parties, the government, the security forces, civil society and the media," he said in a statement.
