Govt hikes sugar price by Tk16 per kg

The government has increased the retail sugar prices by Tk16 per kilogram. The price of unpacked sugar is hiked from Tk104 per kg to Tk120.

A notification signed by the commerce ministry’s joint controller Shamima Akter confirmed the matter on Thursday (May 11). Besides, the price of packaged refined sugar has been hiked to Tk 125 per kg from Tk 109 per kg.

According to the notice, Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) has reviewed the price and supply situation of sugar. In the review application of Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association, LC opening for the month of April, in-bond, out-bond price, and the international market price of unrefined sugar were followed to fix the new rate. Earlier, on April 6 last, the government reviewed rates of loose and packaged sugar and fixed those at Tk 104 a kg and Tk 109 kg respectively.
