Editors' Council places 4-point demand for media freedom

Daily Bangla Times: The Editors' Council (Sampadak Parishad) has demanded the scrapping of the Digital Security Act (DSA) and other repressive laws to ensure freedom of expression and media freedom.

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the council's president, Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, made the call at a discussion organized at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday (May 2).

While presiding over the discussion, titled "Freedom of expression is the driving force of all human rights", he presented four-point to ensure free journalism.

1. The draft laws against the independent and free journalism will have to be suspended immediately.

2.  The Digital Security Act (DSA) will have to be repealed. If the government faces any obstacles to cancel it, then they will have to incorporate a section in the act which will state that the law will not apply to media, independent journalism and press freedom.

All journalists arrested in cases under this act will have to be released and those cases that have been filed as of now for doing journalism will have to be withdrawn.

3. The government will have to take initiative to eliminate the atmosphere of fear.

4. A law will have to be enacted to protect journalists.

Hasanul Haq Inu, President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, was present in the meeting as a guest of honour.

Former information minister Inu said Digital Security Act needs to be reviewed and amended. It is necessary to listen to the Information Minister immediately and make corrections in some places. It is not right to hang it.
