1,500 shops could be damaged in Dhaka New Supermarket fire

Daily Bangla Times: Traders fear that around 1,500 shops might be damaged in a fire at the three-storey New Supermarket in Dhaka. Palashi fire station was informed about the blaze at New Supermarket, a market between the popular New Market and Dhaka College, at 5:40am on Saturday. Twenty-eight firefighting units were making frantic efforts to bring the fire under control at the time of writing. Shop owners rushed to the market after hearing the news of the fire, trying to salvage as many goods as they could. Many of them burst into tears upon seeing their shops go up in flames. Rubel Mia said he closed his shop, Tasnia Fashion, on the market's first floor at 2am and returned to his home in Nawabpur, Dhaka. He heard about the fire at dawn, and when he arrived, the fire had already spread throughout the market. With the help of his relatives, he desperately tried to recover some of the clothes in his shop. Although the fire did not reach his shop, the goods got wet with water being sprayed to put out the flames. Rubel was wailing sitting near some goods that he could remove from the shop. "I managed to get some clothes out. I have Tk40 lakh worth of goods in the warehouse. I could not even get to the door to the warehouse. I am totally ruined," said Rubel. Md Mujibur Rahman, who sells children's clothes at the market, said the water had damaged all his goods. "There are over 1,500 shops in the market. All of them will suffer losses. Such a tragedy has befallen us just ahead of Eid."
