Taijul's five wicket haul put Bangladesh on top after day one in Mirpur test

Daily Bangla Times: After winning both of the shorter format series against the Irish, team tigers moved to the Royal format of the game, Test Cricket.

Ireland captain Balbirne won the toss earlier the day and elected to bat first at Sher e Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (4th April). Ireland debuted 7 players in this match with PJ Moor who played tests for Zimbabwe already.

The decision soon backfired as they lost their opener Murray Commins only in the 4th over of the match. Shariful Islam trapped him infront of his pads and Commins missed the inswinger which brought his death. Ebadat Hossain got the other opener in the 10th over. This time James McCollum had a loose shot and found himself in the hands of Nazmul Shanto. The left arm tweaker Taijul Islam got the Irish skipper Bilbirne. Bilbirne's premeditated sweep didn’t go towards his plan as the ball rapped on the pads and he too was gone. Ireland was reeling at 48-3.

Debutant Harry Tector and Curtis Campher's partnership saved Ireland from falling into hole. They stitched a 74-run partnership. Following this partnership, Harry Tector notched up his maiden Test fifty on debut and became the first and only player from Ireland to score a fifty on test debut. However, he was knocked over by Mehedi Miraz.

A terrible shot from PJ Moor saw his departure. He went back to hutch scoring only 1 on his debut in Irish jersey. While the other, Curtis Campher was bamboozled by Taijul Islam and he was gone scoring 34.

And then, Lorcan Tucker and Mark Adair kept the truck going. They made valuable 40 runs together before Tucker's departure. Tucker was stumped by Taijul after scoring 37 runs. But he made sure to breach the 200 mark.

The last hope of Ireland, Mark Adair had some time with tailenders and scored 32 runs. But he was plumb infront of pads off Taijul. With this wicket, Taijul had another five wicket haul at home.

And Mehedi Miraz in the very next over wrapped things knocking over Hume. And Ireland had a per total of 214 runs on the board.

Taijul Islam had his 12th five wicket haul this innings, while Miraz and Ebadat had two apiece. Bangladeshi bowlers collective performance put Ireland under pressure throughout the period and hence they restricted Ireland under 250.

Bangladesh had to negotiate few overs before stumps. But the hosts started their innings with the worst way possible. Nazmul Shanto tried to cut against Mark Adair and was knocked over by him. Shanto was gone with a golden duck and Ireland were pumped. Veteran opener Tamim Iqbal and number three batter Muminul Haque did see the storm of new ball and negotiated the remaining overs properly and both were teeing off loose deliveries. But Andy McBrine came with the hammer blow in the final ball of the day as he took the wicket of Tamim. And Ireland finished the day keeping their head high.

Bangladesh are now 34-2  and trailing by 180 runs. They've got their entire batting lineup in their hutch and they'll be looking for atleast 400 tomorrow.
