Minor boy Murder: Highway blocked at Uttara for justice

BD Correspondent: Local people blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in front of Rajlakshmi Complex at Azampur of Uttara for about eight hours until 6:00pm on Wednesday demanding justice for the murder of a seven-year boy, causing severe traffic jam on the highway.

The body of the victim, Rifat, son of day labourer Abdur Rashid of Munshi Market area of Dakkhinkhan in Dhaka, was recovered from a water tank of a nearby house early Tuesday.
After a post-mortem examination on the body, the victim’s family and a number of local people took the coffin near Azampur Foot Bridge at about 10:00am on Wednesday and began demonstration demanding arrest and exemplary punishment for the killers.

After the closure of the nearby schools at about noon, schoolchildren as well as workers of nearby apparel factories joined the protests and blocked the highway, witnesses said.
Commuters said that severe traffic jam was created on both the sides of the highway and they had to suffer immensely for the tailback.

Dakhkhinkhan police station sub-inspector Shilpi Khatun told New Age that the protesters withdrew the blockade at about 6:00pm and traffic movement became normal.
The victim’s father lodged a case with the police station on Tuesday accusing Ranjit Kumar Basak and his wife Rekha Rani Basak for killing his son, she said.
The police official said that both the accused went into hiding and police continued drives at places to nab them.

Victim’s father at the demonstration alleged that his son was flying kite on the roof of a building near their house Monday afternoon but the thread was cut and the kite fell on their neighbouring landlord Ranajit Kumar Basak.
He alleged that later Ranajit called Rifat assuring of returning the kite and Rifat went to his house but never came back.

As Rifat went missing, he along with local people, went to Dakkhinkhan police station to lodge a case but police took no effective measure to rescue him, Abdur Rashid said.
He said that the caretaker of the house saw Rifat’s body in the water tank of the house early Tuesday, informed local people and police recovered the body.
Rashid alleged that Ranjit killed his son and dumped the body in the tank and fled away.
