Mehedi’s five give Bangladesh big win

Sports Report:

Bangladesh off-spinner Mehedi Hasan claimed 5-38 while Taijul Islam finished with 2-93 as Bangladesh secured a 218-run win over Zimbabwe to level the two-match Test series 1-1 at Sher-e Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday.

Brendan Taylor struck unbeaten 106 off 167 balls but could not resist Bangladesh of winning the second match as the visitors were all out for 224 runs before the tea break of final day after other batsmen failed to give Taylor proper support.

Taylor, who struck his sixth Test hundred—  back-to-back in this match after hitting 110 runs in the first innings, put up a lone battle in the fifth day despite the loss of wickets from the other hand as the visitors failed to notch up a Test series victory after seven years.

Off-spinner Mehedi Hasan, made the most of the damage on the final day as he claimed 5-38 – his fifth five-wicket haul in Test career to give Bangladesh a series leveling victory after they lost the first Test in Sylhet by 151 runs.

Mustafiz gave Bangladesh the first breakthrough on the final day as he bowled Sean Williams out for 13 runs in the ninth over of day’s play.

Spinner Taijul then dismissed Sikandar Raza (13) by taking a sharp catch of his own bowling to put Bangladesh on top in the contest but Taylor and Peter Moor frustrated Bangladesh bowlers as they added 66 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was dismissed by Mehedi.

Bangladeshi spinners didn’t take long to dismiss Zimbabwe afterwards as Bangladesh clinched their first Test win after 15 months.

Earlier, Bangladesh declared their second innings on 224 for six at the tea break Wednesday after skipper Mahmudullah Riyad completed his second century in eight years.
